Toward a More Coherent Understanding of the Organization–Society Relationship: A Theoretical Consideration for Social and Environmental Accounting Research.Jennifer C. Chen & Robin W. Roberts - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics 97 (4):651-665.
In this study we analyze the overlapping perspectives of legitimacy theory, institutional theory, resource dependence theory, and stakeholder theory. Our purpose is to explore how these theories can inform and be built upon by one another. Through our analysis we provide a broader theoretical understanding of these theories that may support and promote social and environmental accounting research. This article starts with a detailed analysis of legitimacy theory by bringing some recent critical discussions on legitimacy and corporations in the management (...)

A motivational systems approach to investigating opinions on climate change.Daniel C. Molden, Robin Bayes & James N. Druckman - 2022 - Thinking and Reasoning 28 (3):396-427.
Understanding how people form opinions about climate change has proven to be challenging. One of the most common approaches to studying climate change beliefs is to assume people employ motivated reasoning. We first detail how scholars in this area have applied motivated reasoning perspectives, identifying a variety of different judgment goals on which they have focused. We next argue that existing findings fail to conclusively show motivated reasoning, much less isolate which specific goals guide opinion formation about climate change. Then, (...)

Broad attention does not buffer the impact of emotionally salient stimuli on performance.Stephanie C. Goodhew & Mark Edwards - forthcoming - Cognition and Emotion.
It has been claimed that a broad attentional breadth buffers the impact of negative stimuli on human perception and cognition. Here we identify issues with the research on which this claim is based, and then rigorously test the claim. To induce narrow versus broad attentional breadth participants attended to the local versus global elements of Navon stimuli, and to investigate the impact of emotionally salient stimuli on performance we measured the effect of task-irrelevant stimuli of varying emotional salience (negative, neutral, (...)

Globalisation & Pedagogy: Space, Place and Identity.Richard Edwards & Robin Usher - 2007 - Routledge.
With different pedagogic practices come different ways of examining them and fresh understandings of their implications and assumptions. It is the examination of these changes and developments that is the subject of this book. The authors examine a number of questions posed by the rapid march of globalisation, incuding: What is the role of the teacher, and how do we teach in the context of globalisation? What curriculum is appropriate when people and ideas become more mobile? How do the technologies (...)

    A Society of Signs? Mediating a Learning Society.Richard Edwards & Robin Usher - 1999 - British Journal of Educational Studies 47 (3):261 - 274.
This article critiques certain notions of a learning society. These are framed largely in economic and humanist frameworks of competitiveness and social exclusion. This overlooks the implications of information, communications and media technologies, and the linguistic turn in social theory. These suggest a learning society can be framed as a 'society of signs'. Some of the possible implications of the latter are outlined.

What makes a good health ‘app’? Identifying the strengths and limitations of existing mobile application evaluation tools.Robin M. Dawson, Tisha M. Felder, Sara B. Donevant, Karen Kane McDonnell, Edward B. Card, Callie Campbell King & Sue P. Heiney - 2020 - Nursing Inquiry 27 (2):e12333.
Research using mHealth apps has the potential to positively impact health care management and outcomes. However, choosing an appropriate mHealth app may be challenging for the health researcher. The author team used existing evaluation tools, checklists, and guidelines to assess selected mHealth apps to identify strengths, challenges, and potential gaps within existing evaluation tools. They identified specific evaluation tool components, questions, and items most effective in examining app content, usability, and features, including literacy demand and cultural appropriateness; technical information; practical (...)

This study examines the relation between firms' corporate philanthropic giving and their performance in three other social domains - employee relations, environmental issues, and product safety. Based on a sample of 384 U.S. companies and using data pooled from 1998 through 2000, we find that worse performers in the other social areas are both more likely to make charitable contributions and that the extent of their giving is larger than for better performers. Analyses of each separate area of social performance, (...)

    Educating tomorrow's professionals.Robin Cohen & C. C. Gotlieb - 1989 - Journal of Business Ethics 8 (2-3):193-199.
This paper begins with the assumption that university educators must continue to encourage students who are bound for professional careers to act responsibly. We describe two particular efforts for exposing students in computer science to the social responsibilities which accompany this career. In describing our specific experiences with students to date, we also comment on the success of these efforts, and offer suggestions for continued success in the future.

Measuring the Integration of Social and Environmental Missions in Hybrid Organizations.Edward N. Gamble, Simon C. Parker & Peter W. Moroz - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 167 (2):271-284.
This paper introduces a new typology and associated measure of social and environmental mission integration by conceptually framing a feature of hybrid organizations—the degree of integration of their revenue model and social–environmental mission. The SEMI measure is illustrated using a hand-collected sample of 256 North American Certified B Corporations. We explore the heterogeneity of SEMI scores by identifying external-facing correlates and demonstrate non-congruence with Certified B Corporation’s audit results. Overall, our findings advance existing knowledge of these hybrid organizations and how (...)
